Roller Hemming - Flexible. Efficient. Reliable.
The use of standard industrial robots, combined with tested standard equipment and panel defined system elements, result in an intelligent system solution with extraordinary capabilities.
The DV Automation robotic hemming cell is a highly flexible and cost effective production facility for low to medium volume production. The hemming cell employs a combination of panel defined items together with tested standard components. This not only means lower investment costs, it also significantly reduces operating and maintenance costs.
Production of all common hem types is easily achieved using the robotic hemming cell. In addition various types of hems, such as the Euro (rope) hem or soft hem, styling edges, transitions or radii, can all be created with the same precision by means of dedicated tools. This is equally true whether the material being hemmed is steel or aluminium.
Flexibility is one of the major plus points.
The system allows the advantage of using the robot controlled hemming head to hem several different components in a single cell. Minor changes and modifications to panel hemming conditions can also be accommodated allowing a quick and cost-effective reaction. The robot can also be used for other tasks for example, by equipping it with a tool changing system. This will allow it to also operate dispensing equipment for adhesives and sealants, or a gripper which will enable it to carry out panel manipulation within the cell.
An even wider range of possibilities is opened up when inter-changeable tools are used.
Advantages:
• The ideal solution for low to medium volume production demands.
• Flexibility as robot can hem various panels and can perform other tasks
• Simple and quiet in operation with no possibility of pollution
• Low cost simple hem roller tooling and use of standard components

Extremely short implementation and commissioning times with rapid achievement of the required hemming quality provide a significant advantage. Once the data has been generated, comprehensive 3D data processing allows it to be used from the design phase all the way through to commissioning. This also includes a process reliability check using a 3D simulation program. The data obtained is then used for offline programming.
If no CAD data is available for the panels requiring hemming it can be obtained by means of digital scanning. This means that the robotic hemming process can be computerized from start to finish, even for existing non-CAD panels.
In general any robot with the necessary payload capacity and stiffness is suitable for use in hemming. Special software and additional measurement and calibration before shipment ensure that every robot possesses the required precision.
Modular system for fixtures:
• Electric and pneumatic equipment (terminal boxes, valve manifolds, cables and hoses) integrated into the fixture construction.
• Excellent accessibility.
